254 | Madison County
Bedias is technically in Grimes County according to Google, but I noticed I didn’t hit the county line until further south on highway 90 my last time through. That puts this little stretch in Madison, and it happens to be my favorite.
I’ve driven from Houston to Dallas and vice-versa so many times at this point, I have favorite little stops along the way. The Cheveron station in Bedias is one of those — a place I regularly stop for snacks and to stretch my legs. I’m regularly the only one in the building not wearing dusty workboots, and usually the only out-of-towner. A few weeks back, one of the two women working cash registers at the front actually shut one down when an old friend wandered in, and perched on the counter as they caught up about family, work, and Christmas plans.
I don’t know that I’ve ever stopped during what would be normal business hours, but every time I walk down the street (no one blinks at a girl leaving her car in the Cheveron parking lot and meandering around), I think I should sometime. Every metal-sided feed shop covered in signs and and notices, painted-brick store and tree-shaded house makes me want to go in and explore.
