I have a tendency to get very project-oriented with creativity. If I’m going to write or take photos, I figure it might as well be to some useful end. A blog post, or a blog series; or, better yet, an independent story of some sort. The photos should be for the #254challenge. Or something I could try selling to a publication later. Or something that somehow gets someone, somewhere’s attention that leads to connections or opportunities or — you get the picture.

Lately, I’ve been trying to do a better job of remembering just to bring my camera along and shoot for… no reason at all. For fun. For practice, maybe; but enjoyment, mostly.

I spent last Monday night on a back porch with friends and their various instruments, listening to them jam bluegrass music and chiming in with harmonies when I knew songs. The low hum of cicadas was an ever-present baseline. The horizon held a post-sunset glow in that impossibly long, late-summer fashion. And while the humidity fogged the lens reliably every few minutes, I remembered to pull my camera out and capture the moment for no reason at all; other than it was a good one, with people I love in a place I’ve grown to.

Think I should do that more often.
