Hey!

Welcome to Ryley Writes, a collection of thoughts, stories, and work from deep in the heart of Texas.

When Momentum Katy asked me to reshoot their staff photos, it was an easy yes; but honestly, I wasn’t sure how they’d turn out. I almost never take portraits, so I don’t have the same confidence as I do in landscape or documentary-style photography in being able to close the gap between what I hope the photo will look like and the actual end result.

Between the comfort level I share with these people, how fun and interesting they all are, and the visual interest of the gym as a background, though, I ended up being really happy with how the photos turned out; and it even gave me a bit of a bug to shoot more in that style. Portrait photography is really about connecting with the person you’re capturing, in my mind, and I loved the process of trying to quickly put people at ease and get them looking like themselves in front of the camera. Not sure what that curiosity will pan out to in terms of future projects, but definitely something I want to explore! And figured I’d share some of my favorite staff photos here.

Ellen was kind enough to snap a couple of me, too, since I always avoid/forget to actually get in front of the lens myself. I didn’t quite set up the focus right for her, but still ended up loving the photo. (Also, have I mentioned I miss my pink hair yet? Yeah? Okay.)

And then there’s this, which just… yeah. There’s this. Feels like the note to end on. Bye.
