Hey!

Welcome to Ryley Writes, a collection of thoughts, stories, and work from deep in the heart of Texas.

High-Five Friday: June 2

High-Five Friday: June 2

"There are two ways to get enough: one is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less." G.K. Chesterton

(It's June. How is it June.)

What I've been working on:

Last Sunday (May 21), Omar, KBC Children's Minister Leslee McWhirter, and myself boarded a plane from Houston to Roatán, then a ferry from Roatán to La Ceiba, then another plane from La Ceiba to Puerto Lempira, which is certifiably The Middle of Nowhere, Honduras. (Formally known as the Miskito Coast, but you know.)

We spent the week gathering stories to share with our kids back in Katy during VBS, as they'll be raising money throughout the event for our missions partners there. I'll be sharing photos and details next week, but suffice to say, it was amazing. My favorite trip I took for this internship, actually, despite its brevity!

We landed back in Houston at 5 P.M. Thursday, I walked through my parents' front door at 7 P.M., emptied the contents of my backpack into the washing machine, took a long shower, packed another bag, went to bed, woke up, got in the car at 8 A.M., and drove to north Dallas for a 2 P.M. job interview. ("Nice to see you, I guess." — my parents.)

I had taken care of hair, eyebrows, lingering sunburn, etc. and looked significantly less like someone who had been hiking around the remote coast of a third world country by the time I rolled into Big D, but as a final push to looking like a civilized adult, I skipped lunch in favor of finding a nail salon. My fingernails were still topped with decaying highlighter orange polish, and my toes looked like, you know, significantly more like I had been hiking around the remote coast of a third world country.

I found a place near the interview site with an hour to go before and ran inside.

"If I'm going just for straight looks and not, like, a spa experience, how fast could you guys do a manicure and pedicure?" I asked the lady at the front counter. She stared at me.

"How fast do you need it?" she asked.

"I have a job interview in an hour," I informed her.

Her eyes widened, then narrowed into a terrifying expression of sheer determination. The next thing I knew, I'd been ushered to a chair by a small team of employees, all of whom threw themselves wholeheartedly into my transformation. I have never seen a mani/pedi executed so quickly or with so much encouragement. It was honestly inspiring. We were a team now. This interview was not my own; it was mine and the employees of Glee Nail Bar. I accepted hugs and tipped generously as I flew out the door.

"GOOD LUCK, HONEY!" another patron called after me.

"THANKS," I yelled back.

Humans are great sometimes.

One interview later, I could relax and enjoy the long weekend (see above photo, bless) before jumping back into all things Honduras this week. We're putting together fun, informational packages on the Miskito Coast and our work there for every kid that comes to VBS, and I'm happy to report that, against all odds, we completed all print components by Wednesday! Once they come in from the printer, all that's left to do is physically put those packages together. Excited for the kiddos to have them in their hands.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need a nap.
